I was watching North by Northwest one day, which I hadn’t seen before. It’s a really good movie, lots of action and romance and such. And it’s from the 50ies, so it’s really quite well-behaved. Mostly. Because at one point, this little gem of a conversation occurs between Cary Grant and Eva-Marie Saint. If I remember correctly, she meant to tell him that she could handle something just fine on her own, because

“I’m a big girl!”“Yeah, and in all the right places, too!”

This was so unexpected in an otherwise very old-fashionedly virtuous movie, I actually laughed out loud!

And as I researched the movie and the trivia surrounding it, as I like to do, I stumbled upon this poem which was allegedly Cary Grant’s favorite (so I wouldn’t put it past him to have sneaked the above quote into the movie by himself):

They bought me a box of tin soldiers,

I threw all the Generals away,

I smashed up the Sergeants and Majors,

Now I play with my Privates all day.

By the by, here’s a motto by Elvis Presley, unexpectedly short and to the point:

When things go wrong

don’t go with them.
